All about JavaScript

JavaScript is a programming language used to make web pages interactive. It is often used to update web pages after they have loaded in your browser. To use Distribly, you need to have JavaScript enabled.

Enabling JavaScript

Below are some links to help you enable JavaScript in the most popular browsers:

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is a scripting language, a kind of mini programming language, which is embedded into web pages to create dynamic content, i.e. it lets your computer update web pages without having to get extra data from the Internet. It should not be confused with Java, which has a similar name, but is a different programming language.

JavaScript is often used for things like: checking data entered into forms before it is sent, updating a page after you click a button or perform some other action, storing and retrieving information on your computer, or detecting which browser you are using and displaying a web page designed specifically for that browser.

All major web browsers support JavaScript, and it is enabled by default.

Is it safe to enable JavaScript?

The short answer is: yes. It is safe for you to enable JavaScript. This is for three reasons:

  1. JavaScript is only used inside your browser, so it cannot access other parts of your computer
  2. Common browsers only use valid JavaScript code
  3. Browsers are designed only to use JavaScript from the website you are visiting, i.e. a website can't pretend to be another website in order to obtain your login details.

The real question is: Is it safe to use websites which use JavaScript? Avoiding JavaScript on the Internet is almost impossible, as most popular websites use it. If a website isn't properly secured, users may be able to insert their own JavaScript into a webpage, enabling them to use it for malicious purposes. At Distribly, we work hard to maintain high security standards to prevent this from happening.
